Came across this lively little vernacular accent of access cockled to the wall of the Grade II listed Hark to Bounty public house in Slaidburn, Lancashire.
What I love about our vernacular buildings is the jocular, playful nature of the facades: not a level line in sight. The filled-in, elliptical attic windows to the eaves are the only nods to the polite.
Even though the external staircase is a substantial thing, no matter how I look at the door above – there’s always a sense of it floating in mid-air.

I love the ingenuity behind the attached ‘mounting-step’ – there to help people climb up and mount their horses. Wonder if it’s still used?
