Visiting St. Davids Cathedral is like a Gothic rollercoaster ride. A gentle descent hoops through the gatehouse to thrust the unexpected onto a steep valley side that hovers over the cathedral below.
There’s lots at play here – the sense of mystery as you move through the gatehouse; the sight of a vast cathedral complex pocketed within a valley; the contortion of scale from the angelic vista beyond the bell tower.
First view of the cathedral brings about the astonishing realisation that human hands actually built something so big and so complex; then, as you pare back the view, the second realisation is how minuscule an enterprise this is when set against the vale, coasts and mountains that surround it.

The interior is a delight – layered like an onion with different epochs crashing into each other.
